The debate was a heated one, with both candidates exchanging ideas on various social issues. When the discussion went to the issue of drugs, Lim noted his accomplishments against drug trade and use during his tenure as the city mayor. Lito Atienza, Lim's opponent for the election, was unconvinced of Lim's statements following the arrest of Lim's son for selling drugs.

In 2008, the authorities apprehended Lim's son, Manuel Lim for selling illegal drugs, an offense that is nonbailable an carries with it life imprisonment. Lim, current Manila mayor, did admit that his son was caught by the PDEA, but claimed that he did not lift a finger to help his son. In order to divert the issue, Lim pointed the accusation of drug use towards Ali Atienza, the son of his opponent and a national and international taekwondo competitor. Ali Atienza who was in the audience cried foul and called Lim a liar, saying that how can a national athlete, who competes in international games with strict drug testing procedures, be a drug addict?

Lim, embarrassed with his allegations, pointed the blame to former vice mayor Lacuna, claiming that Lacuna was the one who said the gossip. Soon after, Ali Atienza brought the incident to the media saying that he would be filing a libel case against Lim. The son of Lito Atienza said that he was deeply hurt about the allegations dropped by Lim. The young Atienza also pointed out that it was really impossible for an athlete to compete if he has been found using illicit drugs, making Lim's accusations a look more like fabricated story. He also added that he will push the charges even after the election.

With election 2010 nearing, it is normal to hear candidates speaking ill against their competitors. This instance has been going on in our country for a long time now as a means for the candidates to come clean from their own imperfections. MANILA, Philippines - Hindi na napigilan ni dating Pangulong Joseph Estrada ang matagal nang kinikimkim na sama ng loob sa kanyang dating matalik na kaibigan na si Manila Mayor Alfredo Lim.

Sa isang kick off rally sa Tondo, Maynila tahasang sinabi ni Estrada na “sinu­ngaling” si Lim kung saan inisa-isa nito ang dahilan ng kanyang sama ng loob sa Alkalde.

Sinabi ni Estrada na nagsinungaling si Lim noong Edsa 2 kung saan nagpaalam lamang ito sa kanya na lalabas upang payapain ang taong bayan subalit nadiskubre niya na sumama na rin ito sa kalsada upang patalsikin siya sa puwesto.

Nang makabalik si Lim sa pagka-alkalde ng lunsod ay nangako ito kay Estrada na hindi pakikialaman ang kaibigang si konsehal Dennis Alcoreza dahil sa isyu ng Vitas slaughter house.
Ayon kay Estrada, hindi tinupad ni Lim ang kanyang pangako at sa halip ay kinaladkad pa ng mga tauhan nito na parang baboy palabas ng slaughter house si Alcoreza.

Ayon pa kay Erap lahat ng kahilingan pa sa kanya ni Lim ay pinagbigyan niya dahil sa pag-aakalang mabuti at tapat itong kaibigan subalit nagkamali pala ito dahil isang “sinungaling” na kaibigan pala ang kanyang pinagbibigyan.

“Kung sa isang konsehal nagagawa niyang kaladkarin na parang baboy paano pa kaya ang isang ordinaryong tao” pagtatanong pa ni Erap.

Nilinaw pa ng dating Pangulo na malaki ang kanyang pagsisisi ng suportahan at i-endorso ang dating kaibigan na isang sinungaling.

Lito Atienza Challenges Lim

Comebacking Manila Mayor Lito Atienza yesterday dared Mayor Alfredo Lim to charge him in court if he has evidence to prove his allegations that he sold parcels of land owned by the local government.

Atienza said Lim should stop his propaganda which consists of lies and nonsense issues, including accusations that he sold city government properties.

He clarified that Lim had also used the same issue against him in 2007. He claimed that if the issue were true and they had evidence against him, they should have sued him back then.

“I challenge them to sue me, so people would know that the issues they're talking about are all lies. Now if they refuse to file charges in court, that means they themselves know that there's no truth to their allegations. It's as simple as that,” Atienza said.

He advised Lim to refrain from talking, saying he's the one who engages in corruption and the one who has much explaining to do to Manilans including the anomalous sale of Century Park Hotel.

“It was his own lawyer, Rey Bagatsing, who filed graft charges against him at the Office of the Ombudsman,” Atienza said. “A lot of cases have been slapped against him and his city officials. They are the ones who have been sued so they should be explaining in court the string of corruption cases filed against them.”

Atienza said he believes that Manilans are intelligent enough to determine who is telling the truth and who is telling lies. He said he is confident that the residents do not believe in fabricated stories or issues concocted against him.

At the same time, Atienza urged city residents to watch over Lim and his officials because they just might also consider selling the City Hall especially now that the time for them to step down from their post nears.
