INC And Other Religious Groups Supports Lito Atienza

Various religious groups, including the influential Iglesia ni Cristo have endorsed the candidacy of comebacking Manila Mayor Lito Atienza.

Apart from INC, Atienza is also being supported by Brother Mike Velarde of El Shaddai, Ustadz Ahmad Barcelom of the Manila Muslim community, Parish Councils of Manila as well as the majority of the city's barangay chairmen, barangay councilors and watchmen and the pro-poor organization People's Movement Against Poverty (PMAP).

It is widely known that the Iglesia ni Cristo has a huge following in the city. With the endorsement of the group, Atienza gains another 5 percent solid votes.

Based on the survey conducted last April 29, Atienza gained a 7 percentage lead against his toughest rival, incumbent Mayor Alfredo Lim. With the INC votes, it can now be considered that Atienza is 12 percent leading against his opponent.

Meanwhile, El Shaddai leader Mike Velarde earlier said Manila needs a pro-life mayor.

“Atienza is not only pro-life, but also pro-good government," he added.

According to Msgr. Mel David, one of Atienza's spiritual advisers, he knows the former Environment secretary too well. “He has a good heart and he is very sincere in wanting to uplift the lives of Manilans. He is pro-God and represents good governance.”

On the other hand, PMAP president Ronald Lumbao said he endorsed the candidacy of Atienza because apart from being a God-fearing person, he believes that the former Environment secretary has a genuine concern to help and improve the plight of the poor.

“His programs answer the needs of the poor community of Manila. He's very much unlike the incumbent mayor who doesn't care about the less fortunate," Lumbao said.

The Muslim community also back Atienza's candidacy, saying he maintains friendship and communication with them despite the difference in belief and religion.

Meanwhile, 650 out of the 897 barangay chairmen, and most of the barangay kagawads and tanods said that they witnessed how the former and present mayor managed the city. They claimed that they were able to prove that Atienza is the one who has a genuine heart to help the people, especially the poor.

Atienza said he is grateful for all the endorsements. He thanked all those who believe in him and his programs and vowed to do his best to improve the quality of life of the Manilans by creating jobs and provide livelihood and other opportunities for all.

Lito Atienza and Alfredo Lim Debate: What Went Wrong?

Mayoralty candidate Alfredo Lim was cornered at the Polo Club Mayoral debate hosted by the Rotary Club of Manila last April 22, 2010. The debate was a heated one, with both candidates exchanging ideas on various social issues. When the discussion went to the issue of drugs, Lim noted his accomplishments against drug trade and use during his tenure as the city mayor. Lito Atienza, Lim's opponent for the election, was unconvinced of Lim's statements following the arrest of Lim's son for selling drugs.

In 2008, the authorities apprehended Lim's son, Manuel Lim for selling illegal drugs, an offense that is nonbailable an carries with it life imprisonment. Lim, current Manila mayor, did admit that his son was caught by the PDEA, but claimed that he did not lift a finger to help his son. In order to divert the issue, Lim pointed the accusation of drug use towards Ali Atienza, the son of his opponent and a national and international taekwondo competitor. Ali Atienza who was in the audience cried foul and called Lim a liar, saying that how can a national athlete, who competes in international games with strict drug testing procedures, be a drug addict?

Lim, embarrassed with his allegations, pointed the blame to former vice mayor Lacuna, claiming that Lacuna was the one who said the gossip. Ali in defense of himself outlined to Lim his clean track record.Lim spoke no more about his allegations against Atienza, while the moderators of the debate take over to calm down both parties. Lito Atienza remained calm despite the events and managed to continue the debate.

The debate however did not last long, but Manila mayor Alfredo Lim tried to save face until the last minute. Unfortunately, Lim must have forgotten that the audience was professional Rotarians. Lim usually gets away with his mediocre style of campaigning when he is facing customary crowd of tricycle drivers, vendors and the likes, but he must consider that he was facing professionals. It is just sad to see how a low and unintelligent debate like this can go. As professionals, people were expecting a more academic and intellectual discussions from the candidates.

Soon after, Ali Atienza brought the incident to the media saying that he would be filing a libel case against Lim. The son of Lito Atienza said that he was deeply hurt about the allegations dropped by Lim. The young Atienza also pointed out that it was really impossible for an athlete to compete if he has been found using illicit drugs, making Lim's accusations a look more like fabricated story. He also added that he will push the charges even after the election.

With election 2010 nearing, it is normal to hear candidates speaking ill against their competitors. This instance has been going on in our country for a long time now as a means for the candidates to come clean from their own imperfections. However, for the candidates, they must also realize that by doing this they are also tarnishing their own reputation in the process. For the record, the public is now tired of drama, what is important is to walk the talk, and not just to talk and talk.

The son of mayoralty candidate Lito Atienza is planning to press charges against his father's opponent Alfredo Lim after the current Manila mayor accused him of being a drug addict. The incident took place during the Mayoralty Debate last April 22, 2010 at the Manila Polo Club. Lim dropped the allegations when the topic of drug abuse was tackled. The young Atienza insisted that he would continue the charges even after election 2010 has ended.

'Inilaglag ako ni Fred Lim' - Erap Estrada

(Pilipino Star Ngayon) Updated March 30, 2010 12:00 AM

Lito Atienza Challenges Lim

Comebacking Manila Mayor Lito Atienza yesterday dared Mayor Alfredo Lim to charge him in court if he has evidence to prove his allegations that he sold parcels of land owned by the local government.

Atienza said Lim should stop his propaganda which consists of lies and nonsense issues, including accusations that he sold city government properties.

He clarified that Lim had also used the same issue against him in 2007. He claimed that if the issue were true and they had evidence against him, they should have sued him back then.

“I challenge them to sue me, so people would know that the issues they're talking about are all lies. Now if they refuse to file charges in court, that means they themselves know that there's no truth to their allegations. It's as simple as that,” Atienza said.

He advised Lim to refrain from talking, saying he's the one who engages in corruption and the one who has much explaining to do to Manilans including the anomalous sale of Century Park Hotel.

“It was his own lawyer, Rey Bagatsing, who filed graft charges against him at the Office of the Ombudsman,” Atienza said. “A lot of cases have been slapped against him and his city officials. They are the ones who have been sued so they should be explaining in court the string of corruption cases filed against them.”

Atienza said he believes that Manilans are intelligent enough to determine who is telling the truth and who is telling lies. He said he is confident that the residents do not believe in fabricated stories or issues concocted against him.

At the same time, Atienza urged city residents to watch over Lim and his officials because they just might also consider selling the City Hall especially now that the time for them to step down from their post nears.

Atienza ibalik!

His uncle, Herminigildo Atienza, was appointed Manila Mayor himself right after the liberation of the city. He was an amazing mayor who was considered as one of the stalwart influences in the founding of the legendary Liberal Party of Philippine politics.

Lito Atienza grew up in a devastated city of Manila that was but a bunch of ruins, walked through the neighborhoods that was but a collection of debris and even swam on the waters of Manila Bay. He would be the perfect Manila Mayor because he grew up in the city in which he dreams to lead. He envisioned that he would eventually put his hat into Philippine politics, elevate the city of Manila into a greatness which will make the ashes of the war a mere afterthought. By gunning for the post of Manila mayor, he can now engage in his dream task of trying to place Manila back to the high status where it belongs.

Lito Atienza is certainly very qualified to become Manila Mayor. He had his primary and secondary education in Ateneo de Manila University and added a Bachelor's degree in Architecture from the University of Santo Tomas. Despite the fact that their family was monetarily rich, they were hardworking which enabled Lito to enter into the top schools. The Atienza family were also very religious and devoted to God. Core family values and religious competence such as these are certainly very important for the position of public servant in Philippine politics.

But perhaps the best qualification of Lito Atienza is his clean and respected name. His father Pepe firmly set foot that no wealth could ever be at par with the value of a good name backed up with a good education. Lito also had lots of peers and always persevered in order to reach his goals. He engaged in manual labor jobs and rode free along classmates with cars without shame because he firmly believed in hard work as the bridge to our goals.

Lito Atienza would definitely enhance his legacy in Philippine politics by running for mayor. Lito Atienza - Saving Abandoned Children

Lito Atienza is presently a part of the list of nominees who will enter in the elections for Manila mayor. These Manila elections, yet once again, would be a proof of the aptitude of the discernment of the electorate to pick a candidate who is worthy of the demanding needs of the colorful city. In terms of qualifications, perhaps there is no one else who fits the post more other than Lito Atienza. And amidst those who will compete for mayor in the Manila elections, no one probably has helped more.

In 1992, even as a Vice-Mayor, Lito Atienza founded with his wife Beng the "Home for the Angels," a child care center for deserted and abused infants. He created this out of his absolute belief that nobody should feel unwanted. He also acknowledges that a few considerations could forcefully separate a parent from his child and this is why he created this shelter for them. The center furnishes sustenance and all the love which these children could ever need.

This center is the image of the good heart of Lito Atienza. This is what electors should be cognizant of during the Manila elections. Such deeds should not be forgotten and should be at the centerpiece during the elections for Manila Mayor.

It would be morally straight if electors during the elections for Manila mayor would pick someone who was vocally against abortion. The principle of Lito Atienza as one of the founders of Home for the Angels has consistently been that abortion is the ultimate child abuse and must be stopped at all costs. The Home of the Angels is a center entailed to be action oriented and attends to as the back up resolution to anti-life challenges. It is a concrete symbol and source of hope at the same time for many people.

During these Manila elections, let us not forget that the Home for the Angels has been a consistent crisis home for abortion survivors and has helped many neglected, abused and exploited infants ever since it was founded fourteen years ago. It has helped many victims and expected victims have a new set of lives and all of these is due to the merciful heart of Lito Atienza. The elections for Manila mayor would surely be a half-baked race if it did not let in a choice such as him. The post of Manila mayor is a position of action conjugated with great hopes.

A total of 301 babies were serviced and accommodated for case management and crisis intervention from year 1996 to the present and a total of 4,371 men, women and teenagers were helped and touched on through crisis intervention by phone and walk-in referrals from 2006 to the present in the center. A total of 356 students and private individuals were served well and supplied with Respect for Life Orientation while a total of 314 children ages 0-6 years old for Early childhood care and Development were served in alternative Day Care services through the Learn and Play Outreach Program. These are efforts of a man who for sure deserves to win in the Manila elections. In the elections for Manila Mayor, these are efforts of a man that ought be up there when we use our judgment.

When Lito Atienza threw his hat into the elections, perhaps many said "finally." The man certainly has achieved a lot but more than this, he has helped a lot. There is a strong indication that all his good efforts will be rewarded during these elections for Manila mayor. He set up the center The Home For The Angels in order to take care of abandoned and neglected children. These Manila elections should reward him with more opportunities to help.
